International Day of Education

International Day of Education is observed on 24 January, a date proclaimed by the United Nations to reinforce the importance of education as a fundamental right and as a driver of social and economic development.

In Portugal, access to education as we know it today is the result of a historic achievement. Until the 20th century, a large part of the population was illiterate, and the ability to read and write was a privilege reserved for only a few. Today, education is a pillar of Portuguese democracy, and higher education, beyond preparing young people for the labour market, plays a crucial role in developing critical thinking, strengthening social and communication skills, and fostering creativity.

Universidade Lusófona therefore reaffirms the importance of valuing and defending education, reminding us that every advance in this field benefits society as a whole.
