EP1 - What Is Life, After All? with José Bragança de Miranda and José Moura
What truly distinguishes a living organism?
Is life simply a combination of matter, energy and chemical processes, or are there social, cultural and technological dimensions that are also part of the answer?
These were some of the questions explored at the first meeting in the series Unlikely Duets: When Biochemistry Meets the World, an initiative organised as part of Lusófona University's new Master's Degree in Applied Biochemistry. The series is based on the idea that the big questions do not belong to a single field of knowledge and require different perspectives to be understood.
Under the theme “What Is Life, After All?”, the first meeting brought together Bragança de Miranda, Rector of Lusófona University, and José Moura, Full Professor at the NOVA School of Science and Technology of NOVA University Lisbon, for a discussion spanning biochemistry, philosophy, sociology and technology.
From cells to societies, metabolism to technology, and energy to information, the first Unlikely Duet showed that answering the question “What is life, after all?” requires much more than a single discipline. Perhaps it is precisely where different fields of knowledge meet that the most important questions emerge.
