    The Hydrology and Sanitary Hydraulics curricular unit combines two essential areas of Civil Engineering: the hydrological characterisation of watersheds and the design of urban water systems. It covers the hydrological cycle, water balance, watershed analysis, precipitation, surface runoff, floods and droughts, as well as water supply networks, domestic wastewater drainage and stormwater drainage. It prepares students to analyse hydrological data and apply technical and regulatory criteria to the planning, design and assessment of hydraulic and sanitary infrastructures.

    1. Hydrological cycle: general concepts and water balance. 2. Watersheds: introduction, characteristics and morphometric analysis. 3. Precipitation: classification and measurement; average rainfall using arithmetic mean, Thiessen polygons and isohyetal methods; intense rainfall; return period. 4. Surface runoff: general concepts; floods and droughts; analysis and estimation of discharges. 5. Water distribution networks: general concepts; calculation of design flows; hydraulic design; regulatory requirements. 6. Domestic wastewater drainage: general concepts; calculation of design flows; hydraulic design; regulatory requirements. 7. Stormwater drainage: general concepts; calculation of design flows; hydraulic design; regulatory requirements.

    Objectives

    1. Understand the hydrological cycle and apply the water-balance equation; 2. Delineate and characterise watersheds, including the analysis of their main morphometric characteristics; 3. Analyse precipitation data, determine average and intense rainfall and use the concept of return period; 4. Characterise surface runoff and estimate mean and flood discharges, interpreting flood and drought phenomena; 5. Design water distribution networks using hydraulic and regulatory criteria; 6. Design domestic wastewater drainage networks; 7. Design stormwater drainage networks; 8. Develop individual and teamwork skills and relate the contents to professional practice through practical activities and a technical visit.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

    Classes will be theory-practical, combining the presentation and discussion of concepts with their application to Civil Engineering data, cases and problems. Problem-Based Learning will be used in hydrological analysis and network design. Case-Based Learning will support the discussion of real situations involving floods, droughts, water supply and drainage. Integrative practical assignments may use a Project-Based Learning approach and be developed in teams through Team-Based Learning. Worksheets, short questions, quizzes and challenges will support formative assessment. A technical visit will bring students closer to the operation and management of infrastructures or services related to the curricular unit.

    Avaliação contínua:

    • Componente A - desempenho e participação nas atividades desenvolvidas em aula, trabalhos práticos, fichas de trabalho e outros elementos solicitados ao longo do semestre, incluindo os trabalhos práticos e as atividades associadas à visita técnica: 30%;
    • Componente B - primeiro teste escrito: 30%;
    • Componente C - segundo teste escrito: 40%.

    É exigida uma classificação mínima de 6 valores em cada componente. Caso o estudante obtenha uma classificação inferior a 6 valores em qualquer componente, a classificação final da unidade curricular será fixada em 9 valores, independentemente da média ponderada obtida.

    A docente poderá solicitar, sem aviso prévio, uma defesa oral individual de qualquer elemento de avaliação, a todos ou apenas a alguns estudantes, para verificação da autoria e do domínio dos conteúdos apresentados.

    Avaliação por exame: prova escrita individual, com ponderação de 100%, nas épocas previstas no calendário académico.
