    The curricular unit Case Studies in Civil Protection I focuses on the analysis of international landmark civil protection events, emphasizing the understanding of prevention, preparedness, response and recovery mechanisms adopted in different contexts. Through the critical analysis of real case studies, the role of international organizations and cooperation mechanisms, students develop skills in applied research, interpretation of technical and scientific information, and communication of results. The curricular unit promotes evidence-based learning, preparing future professionals to analyse complex emergencies, identify lessons learned and apply this knowledge to improve future civil protection practices.

    Objectives

    By the end of the curricular unit, students should be able to understand the principles of Civil Protection through the analysis of national and international case studies. Identify the role of the main national and international organizations involved in emergency and disaster management, as well as the existing cooperation mechanisms. Develop skills in research, literature review and critical analysis of technical and scientific information. Apply case study methodologies to identify success factors, operational limitations and lessons learned. Develop scientific communication skills through the preparation, presentation and discussion of research projects.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

    Blended learning model combining synchronous online classes (7 weeks) and face-to-face classes (8 weeks). Active teaching and learning methodologies, namely Problem-Based Learning (PBL), are implemented through the critical analysis of real Civil Protection case studies, literature review and guided discussion. The Moodle platform supports learning by providing teaching materials, scientific resources, activities and communication with students. The assessment model is based on the progressive development of a research project, including an interim presentation, a written test and a final presentation of results. Student support sessions are available outside regular class hours.

    AVALIAÇÃO - Tipo contínua, com base em: participação nas aulas (10%), apresentação intercalar (10%), poster científico (10%), teste escrito de avaliação (40%) e apresentação e defesa final (30%). No caso de não aprovação ou desistência, o estudante fica admitido a exame final (100 %).
