This course introduces fundamental concepts, methods, and practices in geology and geomorphology to support students in Civil Protection. It covers the Earth’s origin, composition, and dynamic evolution; identification and classification of key minerals and rocks; soil properties; geological and geotechnical prospection; surface and groundwater dynamics; rock mass behavior; geological hazards; and geomorphological processes related to natural risk assessment and mitigation.

Objectives
Objectives
Introduction of fundamental concepts, methods and practices of geology and knowledge of geomorphological processes that allow the acquisition of the following skills: understanding the origin, generic constitution and evolution dynamics of the Earth. - Know, characterize and identify the main types of minerals and rocks, including the processes of their formation and the alteration of rock masses. - Know and define the parameters that characterize soils, as well as the geological and geotechnical recognition and prospecting processes. - Understand the dynamics of surface and underground water. - Know the main properties of rocks and geological characteristics of massifs with a view to solving engineering and environmental problems arising from interaction with human activities. - Understand geological accidents with a view to their prevention or mitigation. - Interpret and understand the geomorphological processes that act on the earth and are linked to natural risk factors.

Teaching methodologies
An active, student-centered model is adopted, oriented toward autonomy in acquiring and applying knowledge in Geology and Geomorphology. Theoretical-practical classes integrate Case-Based Learning and Problem-Based Learning (PBL), combining conceptual exposition with applied practical examples to enable early diagnosis of learning difficulties. As this is the only course unit in this field within the study program, the pedagogical strategy incorporates actions specifically designed for knowledge levelling and standardization, adapting instruction to the diverse entry backgrounds of students. The learning path fosters both individual and collaborative practical work (Team-Based Learning), with autonomous study continuously supported through tutoring sessions and personalized guidance.

Avaliação contínua: dois testes; adicionalmente, os estudantes poderão escolher entre i) um trabalho prático e ii) uma prova prática envolvendo a identificação de rochas e minerais. Na definição da nota final, a ponderação é: testes (45% cada), trabalho prático/prova prática (10%). Em caso de reprovação em avaliação contínua, o estudante será admitido a um exame final global de época de recurso (100%), nos termos do Regulamento de avaliação de conhecimentos e competências da IES.
