    This UC promotes in students the ability to relate the knowledge of the themes worked throughout the classes with the problematization of current sport issues and the perspectives of their development, which will allow them to build a holistic thinking about the different dimensions of sport

    • From the theory of Physical Education to Sport Sciences.
    • Culture and Sport: Conceptual structure of cultural dynamics; Sport as a cultural phenomenon.
    • Ancient civilizations
    • Classical Antiquity: From the Hellenic period to the Roman period.
    • Middle Ages: Physical activities with functional characteristics.
    • Modern age. The Renaissance Movement and the positions of humanists in relation to corporal education. Illuminist Movement in affirming the importance of recreational-sports activities.
    • Physical Education and sport in the 19th and 20th centuries: Military currents; Hygienist chains; The pedagogical currents; Sport chains.
    • The 20th century and the development and generalization of sport: From Gymnastics to the globalization of Sport
    • Physical Education and sport in Portugal: Foreign influences on the development of Physical Education in Portugal. The teaching of Physical Education in Portugal.
    • The Olympic movement in modernity


  • Objectives


    At the end of this U.C., students will be able to:

    Understand the meaning of the concept of Physical Education and Sport, using historical terminology correctly.

    Know how to analyze the characteristics of the various stages of Physical Education and Sport, relating them to the cultural context of each historical period.

    To know the configurations of the different models of contemporary sport from the philosophical and ideological currents that justified them.

    Be able to communicate their knowledge and reasoned reflections to different interlocutors;

    Develop reflective capacity and critical thinking about body activities performed in the past, to understand sport in the present.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Different teaching methodologies will be used: Expository classes; Viewing and discussion of documentaries/videos; Bibliographic research; Analysis of scientific articles; Small group activities; Feedback information provided by the teacher about the work carried out. The teaching methodologies proposed and described integrate a set of pedagogical innovation practices based on evidence, and adjusted to the objectives and contents of the curricular unit.
