Objectives
Objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Apply the economic way of thinking (scarcity, cost-benefit analysis, opportunity cost, marginal reasoning, incentives) and explain how prices and profit coordinate decisions in a market economy. 2. Identify market failures and government failures and analyse self-organised collective action as an institutional alternative. 3. Identify and distinguish concepts, models and typologies of Social Economy. 4. Relate Social Economy to social policies, the market and the role of the State. 5. Analyse the historical evolution and the main normative and institutional milestones of Social Economy in Portugal. 6. Evaluate Social Economy organisations, including social entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives, as institutional responses to social problems. 7. Communicate analyses of sector organisations critically and rigorously, integrating empirical evidence and distinguishing positive from normative analysis.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
The course employs active and participatory methodologies that integrate theory and practice, fostering autonomy and collaborative learning. Each module opens with a problem question posed in everyday language, which students answer at the end with the appropriate concepts. Lectures are complemented by case studies and debates, which stimulate critical thinking and the problematization of theories. Students carry out practical assignments, applying the knowledge they have acquired to real-life situations. Study questions distributed for each module encourage prior preparation of topics and in-depth discussions. Critical analysis of scientific articles and institutional reports develops academic reading, interpretation and argumentation skills. A central activity is the institutional analysis project: each group analyses a real organization and presents it to the class, thereby strengthening the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical realities.
