Class Theory of Architecture 1.2

  • Presentation

    Presentation

Architectural Theory 1.2 continues from Architectural Theory 1.1, moving from the discipline's general vocabulary to the concrete elements through which architecture is made. It is situated within the field of architectural theory and criticism and is organised around a restricted set of elements - the stair, the ramp, the inclined plane, thickness, and colour - understood as spatial materials and design decisions that determine how a building is inhabited and traversed. The course unit focuses on the analysis of concepts and case studies and includes the reading of foundational texts accessible to first-year students.

Topic 1 - Le Corbusier and the five points Topic 2 - The stair Topic 3 - Oblique space Topic 4 - The ramp Topic 5 - Inhabitable thickness Topic 6 - Colour Topic 7 - Giedion: conceptions of space
  • Objectives

    Objectives

Identify and accurately define the elementary architectural concepts introduced during the semester, distinguishing between a building element and a design decision. Recognise Le Corbusier's Five Points and situate them within the debate to which they respond. Analyse an element - stair, ramp, inclined plane, or thick wall - identifying its relevance to the reading and experience of space. Recognise colour as a design decision in its symbolic and cultural dimensions, and describe its spatial effects. Distinguish between the conceptions of space proposed by Giedion and apply them to the analysis of case studies. Present a piece of work publicly and respond to questions about it. Use sources ethically, transparently, and with verification, including those generated by AI systems, while taking responsibility for the accuracy of the information presented.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

All contact hours for this course unit are allocated to theoretical teaching (T). The methodologies described are implemented through lectures, guided discussion, and seminar sessions. Exercises are carried out as independent student work within the hours allocated for this purpose. a) Lecture sessions conclude with a synthesis that translates the content into an operative question directed towards the work being developed in the Design Studio course unit. b) Three levels of work, with distinct functions: short worksheets, individual exercises, and a group exercise. c) Cross-course visits constitute lecture sessions conducted in diverse contexts, with commentary guided by the instructor. d) Collective construction of a semester glossary. e) Critical literacy in the use of generative AI (GenAI). f) Moodle platform for the distribution of texts, reading guides, assignments, and feedback on assessments - inverted classroom.
