Resume

João Manuel Marques Carrilho (artistic name: Jonas Runa) is an artist, researcher and Associate Professor at Universidade Lusófona (Lisbon), where he directs the BA in Sound Science and Technology and the MA in Sound Production and Technologies. His work develops a research programme at the intersection of Science and Technology of the Arts, artistic research and media theory, focusing on sound and listening as structural dimensions of mediation, embodiment and technologically mediated environments. Trained in Physics and Mathematics at Instituto Superior Técnico and in Sonology at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, he completed a PhD in Science and Technology of the Arts (2015). His research advances conceptual and methodological frameworks that reposition auditory analysis within broader debates on technological modernity, perceptual regimes and socio-cultural organization. This trajectory has evolved from ontological and epistemological inquiry into listening toward the development of analytical models addressing mediation ecologies and technologically structured environments. He was awarded an FCT CEEC Individual research contract and served as Co-Principal Investigator of the FCT-funded project Technologically Expanded Performance, where he developed computational tools for real-time sound–movement interaction and contributed to consolidating technologically expanded performance as a research domain. His research-based artistic work has been presented in major international institutional contexts, including the Venice Biennale and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. In 2021, he was selected as a member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon – Young Scientists Seminar, recognizing his cross-disciplinary contributions to arts, technology and research.
