Resume

After completing my Computer Science and Engineering undergraduate degree at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, I pursued an M.Sc. in the same field at IST, with a focus on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), driven by my interests during the B.Sc. My master’s thesis focused on Incidental Visualizations. This opportunity led to a trainee position at Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores - Investigação e Desenvolvimento (INESC-ID), where I collaborated with the Graphics \& Interaction (GI) research area. This experience solidified my interest in research. Upon completing my M.Sc., I decided to continue in academia, beginning my Ph.D. in 2019 as a Junior Researcher at INESC-ID, again with the GI area, passing with distinction in July 2024. Currently I am an Integrated Researcher at INESC-ID and an Associate Researcher at INESC Inov Lab group COPELABS from Universidade Lusófona. My research deepened into Information Visualization (InfoVis), aiming to help users better interpret and make decisions based on visualized data. I also realized the potential of integrating InfoVis with Augmented Reality (AR) to make visualizations an integral part of daily life. My doctoral work focused on developing incidental visualizations to enhance people’s awareness of surrounding information. In parallel with my PhD, I participated in a research project (PTDC/CCI-CIF/28939/2017), funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), where I contributed to the development of innovative visualization techniques designed to highlight key features in Streaming Big Data. I have already co-supervised 12 master thesis in HCI, and I am currently co-supervising 6. I have also served as an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior de Tecnologias Avançadas (ISTEC), as an Invited Professor at Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE) and Instituto Politécnico de Beja (IPBeja), and as a Teaching Assistant at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). Currently, I am an Assistant Professor at Universidade Lusófona in Lisbon. In all institutions, I have been consistently teaching courses related to HCI. Since 2020, I have also been serving on the organizing committees of several major HCI conferences, primarily as a Hybrid Chair. In this role, I was responsible for ensuring that remote participants could attend virtually and have an optimal experience. My involvement in organizing prestigious conferences, such as the IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces and the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, has helped me build a strong network of international research connections within the HCI community. My success as Hybrid Chair has led to annual invitations to organize at least one conference per year. This continued participation has enabled me to collaborate with researchers across various HCI fields and gain their respect. Finally, I authored a Portuguese book titled “Visualização de Informação: Princípios e Técnicas para a Compreensão e Comunicação de Dados,” the first Portuguese book in my field.
