Resume
R. Menezes is the CBIOS Director of Societal Impact and Community Engagement and Principal Investigator in the Models & Molecular Mechanisms Lab, where she coordinates the Diabetes research team. Her research has been driven by curiosity about the genetic reprogramming that orchestrates cellular adaptation to environmental stimuli in the areas of Genetics and Molecular Biology. With a degree in Biological Sciences and a MSc in Biological Sciences - Genetics, she enrolled in the PhD Program in Genetics at UFRJ, where she was awarded a highly competitive scholarship by DAAD to do the PhD research at the Institut für Mikrobiologie - HHUD. Her doctoral studies advanced our understanding of the molecular switch that governs carbon source utilization in model eukaryotic organisms. As a post-doc at UNL, her focus remained on the exploration of cellular adaptive responses. Her international reputation in yeast genetics was consolidated in 2013, when a European consortium set her the compelling challenge to establish a SMART (Simple Molecular Architecture Research Tool) yeast platform tailored to the bioprospecting of molecules with therapeutic interest. The project was remarkably successful, from the design of pioneering model organisms to the discovery of novel bioactive compounds. In this project, she developed an innovative yeast model that faithfully replicates the proteotoxic effects of IAPP, culminating in beta-cell dysfunction and loss in diabetes. These discoveries catalyzed a fundamental shift in her research focus towards diabetes in 2016. Since then, her team, first at IBET and currently at CBIOS, has been dedicated to elucidating the health-promoting attributes of dietary (poly)phenolic metabolites to counteract IAPP-induced beta-cell dysfunction and to promote the increase of beta-cell mass. She has been recognized in clinical spheres through the Nuno Castelo-Branco Prize by SPD, research grants from the Portuguese Funding Agency, and iNova4Health Translational Medicine Program. Her team has also been supported by prestigious FCT and Fulbright scholarships for doctoral studies and advanced training.

Nutrition plays a key role in preventing non-communicable diseases, with non-animal-based diets linked to improved body composition and health. In this study, vegetarians show lower LDL and non-HDL cholesterol, yet CVD risk depends more on body fat distribution, underscoring the importance of diet quality and composition.
