Webinar analyses the role of religion in politics and highlights cooperation between the state and religious communities in Portugal
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
In the most recent webinar by Lusófona University, Professor Jorge Botelho Moniz led a profound reflection on the dynamics between religion and politics in contemporary societies. Drawing on his academic research and pioneering projects such as the “Carta das Religiões” in Odivelas, the professor addressed the concept of secularisation and the challenges of cooperation between the State and religious institutions in an increasingly plural Europe.
Based on the intersection of Political Science and Religion, the webinar explored the role of religion in the public sphere, questioning the classical thesis that more modernity implies less religion. Through the analysis of authors such as Peter Berger and Christian Smith, the discussion focused on the resurgence of religion as a response to the crisis of modernity and its persistence as a factor of cohesion, identity, and conflict in the global landscape.
Using concrete examples, such as the collaboration between Lusófona University and the municipality of Odivelas to map local religious diversity, Professor Jorge Botelho Moniz highlighted the contribution of universities to the formulation of inclusive public policies, especially in the context of migrant integration.
Watch the webinar and discover how religion continues to shape the political and social sphere in the 21st century.
