Syllabus
Syllabus
1 - Basic statistics: Distributions and associated analyses. Parameters for location and dispersion. Data transformation. 2 - Sampling techniques: Quadrat method. Spatial pattern analysis: aggregated, regular or random. Sampling methods: random, capture-recapture and transects. 3 - Analysis of variance (ANOVA): Introduction. 1-way ANOVA (fixed and random models). 2-way ANOVA (fixed, random or mixed crossed model, nested model). 3-way (or higher) ANOVA. Conditions of use. A posteriori analyses. 4 - Correlation and regression: Simple linear correlation. Pearson coefficient. Simple regression analysis. Residuals plot. 5 - Non-parametric statistics: Mann-Whitney analysis. Wilcoxon analysis. Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA. Spearman correlation.

Objectives
Objectives
Competences that should be developed: Mastery of most frequent statistical analyses. Autonomy to plan experiments and observation campaigns, and to analyze data. Capacity to choose the analysis that is most adapted to the data in study.
-
Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
The student is put in a real situation: real data to analyze, total freedom in the choice of the analysis to try and develop his capacity to choose the most apropriate, information availability similar to the situation a scientist would know in the laboratory.

As
aproveitamento final:
Presential teaching with theoretical and theoretico-practical classes: Theoretical classes are lectures of
facultative attendance that follow the defined syllabus and respect the objectives of the discipline.
Theoretico-practical classes are mandatory classes under the guidance and orientation of a teacher and
are intended to practice techniques described in theoretical lectures with real data.
Requirements to pass the discipline:
1) Continuous evaluation by 2 midterm exams (90%) and class attendance (10%) (final classification
- weighted average - equal or superior to 10), with all documents allowed and computer provided.
Or
2) Theoretico-practical exame by the end of the semestre with a 100% weight (classification equal or
superior to 10), with all documents allowed and computer provided. Students with a classification of at
least 9,5 obtained for a theoretico-practical component at a previous evaluation (continuous evaluation or
previous examination) are exempted from repeating it.
