Presentation
The course unit Multilingualism and Language Policies offers a critical reflection on linguistic diversity in the contemporary world and on the role of languages in social, cultural, educational and institutional dynamics. As part of the BA in Portuguese Studies, this unit approaches Portuguese within a multilingual context, considering the challenges and opportunities arising from globalisation, mobility and interculturality. Through an interdisciplinary perspective, students explore the relationship between language, power, identity and citizenship, as well as policies for the promotion, preservation and valorisation of languages. The unit contributes to a broader understanding of language as a means of communication, knowledge production and cultural transmission, while strengthening key competences for academic, social and professional contexts.

Objectives
Objectives
Taking the case of the Portuguese language as a starting point, this Curricular Unit (CU) aims to reflect on geographical spaces in which multiple languages coexist, analyzing the diachronic and synchronic relationships between them from a linguistic, political, social, economic and cultural point of view. In particular, issues related to multilingualism/bilingualism, the multidimensional relationship between dominant languages and minority languages, the effects of language contact and language planning will be explored. The effects of language technologies and, in particular, the challenges of Artificial Intelligence will also be analyzed.
