Class Cognitive Processes I - Attention and Perception

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This Course Unit aims to study cognitive processes related to information processing in different perceptual modalities. It addresses the conceptual foundations of attention and perception, exploring how these processes interact and complement each other in constructing our experience of the world. Additionally, it provides the essential bases for understanding how human beings acquire, interpret, and react to environmental information, serving as a foundation for future curricular units.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

The UC's objectives focus on promoting knowledge of the conceptual foundations of attention and perception from an interactive and complementary perspective, such as: LO1. Differentiate the concepts of sensation and perception, their interaction in information processing, and the characteristics of perceptual modalities. LO2. Develop the ability to describe the main theoretical models of perception and attention. LO3. Develop practical and laboratory skills in perception and attention research, using programs like PsychoPy to apply methodologies and experimental paradigms. LO4. Develop and consolidate knowledge of the applications of perception and attention research in studying and understanding individual differences. LO5. Stimulate critical thinking, promoting the interconnection of knowledge with other course units. LO6. Evaluate the implications of this area for understanding individual differences, behavior, and learning.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

It encompasses two components, theoretical and practical, which are paired in terms of their programmatic content. The teaching methodology is predominantly expository, using PowerPoints and complemented by multimedia resources like videos and practical examples to illustrate concepts, fostering learning and motivation. Active student participation is promoted through interrogative methodologies, encouraging dialogue, especially in the practical component. The active methodology is reflected in students' direct involvement in research projects within the HEI-Lab, as well as in their data collection and analysis. The laboratory practical aspect includes applying behavioral and experimental paradigms, guided research activities, discussing scientific articles, and writing empirical reports and/or articles, which are important for an introduction to research methodologies.
