    Syllabus

    - The city as an ecosystem. - Fundamentals of environmental, technological, economic, and socio-cultural sustainability. - Essential values in urban intervention at the environmental, social, and experiential level. - The inputs and outputs of the system: energy, water, and food vs air pollution and effluents. - Urban growth and urban density. - The ecological footprint. - National legislation and international directives. - Regulatory institutions. - The importance of urban regeneration. - Urban strategies for sustainable mobility and sustainable construction. - Concepts of garden-city, eco-cities, and eco-neighborhoods. - Concepts of polycentrism, green corridors, and ecological structure of the city-region (cf. Decree-Law 380/99). - Parameters for analyzing the sustainability of the urban fabric. - Sustainability, resilience, and quality of life.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    - apprehend the importance of environmental and ecological values ¿¿for sustainable development and the role of the architect in that context; - identify the main concepts, policies, and recent theories in the field of urban ecology and sustainability. - recognize the existing instruments and documents related to the environment and sustainable development, as well as how to read and interpret these documents and their interrelationships. - know how to analyze the urban fabric according to ecological, comfort, health, and safety parameters (micro-climates, heat islands, ventilation corridors, permeable areas, biodiversity, retention basins, water lines, noise, earthquake risk, walking paths, green spaces, and bike lanes. - master intervention strategies in the urban fabric in order to improve the ecological quality of the city. - achieve critical and instrumental operability in successive approaches to intervention scales in the territory.
