Class Seminar on Contemporary Issues in Criminal Sciences I

In the context of a Master's program in Criminal Sciences, the inclusion of a Criminology course unit is of the utmost importance; this is the aim of this seminar.

Gangs and group crime: Concepts. Gang and group crime figures (structure, subculture and transgression); Branches of activity and "specialization"; Geographical spread and operational routes; Economic impact of organized crime; Relation to terrorism; Psycho-affective violence: Violent behavior; Gender and violent behavior; Domestic violence. Relational and psycho-affective violence; The proximal relationship between victim and aggressor. Typology of domestic violence; Domestic violence and formal and informal control devices; Secondary criminalization. Tertiary criminalization? Punitive severity in domestic violence: studies and instruments; Intervention and prevention; Risk assessment of victimization. Profiling: Definition, history and evolution; Criminology and profiling; Psychological, behavioral and situational theories; Profiling and criminal investigation; methods and techniques; Typologies; myths and realities; Profiling in Portugal

The course comprises theoretical classes presenting the syllabus content, as well as theory-practice sessions where the instructor's presentation is complemented by student reflection and debate. The theoretical component involves introducing the topics to be addressed in the practical sessions, accompanied by the reading and discussion of texts. Emphasis is placed on student participation, the study of practical cases, debate, and the analysis of scientific literature. Additionally, classes featuring guest experts will be held, and students are expected to participate in specially organized seminars Assessment will consist of an individual assignment, supervised by the teacher, which will be shared and discussed in class (50 %) and a written test (50 %)
