    The curricular unit (CU) of Applied Toxicology aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of Toxicology, associated with the most relevant topics of toxicology in the context of non-drug products (NDPs). This course will thus provide students with the expertise in toxicology that is needed for the understanding and subsequent employment in the safety assessment of NDPs.

    Unit 2. Types of toxic effects

    2.1. Non-Organ-Directed Toxicity: mutagenesis, carcinogenesis

    2.2. Development and Reproductive Toxicology. Endocrine disruptors.

    2.3. Organ-Directed Toxicity: liver, gastro-intestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, dermal, neurological and renal

     

    Unit 3. Toxicology applied to non-drug products

    3.1.Methods for the toxicological evaluation: cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, dermatotoxicology assays

    3.2.Relevant types of toxicants: metals, toxins from plants, animals and fungi, pesticides residues, industrial toxicants, toxic products from packaging materials

    3.3.Toxicogenomics

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    It is intended that students:

    - Know the basic concepts of toxicology

    - Understand the occurrence of the main types of toxic effects

    - Be able to describe the most important toxic agents in the context of NDPs, regarding the exposure, mechanisms of toxicity, and effects on human health

    - Comprehend the process of risk assessment and the most relevant methodologies for the safety evaluation of NDPs
