Class Advanced Industrial Systems

This curricular unit aims at introducing students to the challenges of Industrial Engineering and Management to respond to the current digital transformation, new materials and processes in a growing technological context (e.g. Industry 4.0), promoting the broad scope of engineering knowledge to concept, design, implementation and operation in enterprise systems. 

1. Introduction: Industrial Engineering and Management challenges and brief technology definitions 
2. Digital Transformation: Perspective, essential elements and strategic goals; Manufacturing, logistics and supply chain systems in industrial sectors 
3. Industry 4.0 (I4.0): Overview, evolution, and definition; Benefits, strategy, and implementation; Trends: Flexible systems, human-machine interaction, additive manufacturing, digital twins, smart manufacturing, augmented reality and Logistics 4.0
   • Internet of Things (IoT): Overview definition and trends; IoT and industrial sectors 
   • Information and Communication Technologies: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Blockchain, Cloud computing and cybersecurity 

The teaching methodology is mainly based on the presentation of the topics with the active participation of the students, along with a problem-based learning based on a real context.
