Class Introduction to Design

  • Presentation

    Presentation

    The Introduction to Design course prepares the student for subsequent design courses. Work methodology, creative design processes and concepts of shape, line, texture, balance and color are fundamental to the student's background formation.

    Syllabus

    1. Design Thinking Methodology 2. Point, line, form, function, composition, balance, harmony. 3. Module / Pattern 4. Visual Communication 5. The Color: Theory and Practice: Black, White, Color (Pantone, Quadrichrome, RGB) 6. Brand visual identity: Theory and practice: brand, symbol, logo. 7. Typography: The importance of typography in visual communication (Form, function, scale, readability, contrast.)
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    This course aims to develop the ability to organize the elements that structure the two-dimensionaldiscourse. In this sense we work the basic concepts of shapes and spaces (structure, scale, color, interaction, modulation, movement, tension). At the same time, we seek to develop curiosity, imagination and critical thinking through a systematic approach to the various methodological notions (research and experimentation processes), using the various forms of representation and presentation (drawing, model). The transmission and apprehension of the different contents are made in theoretical moments and applied in specific practical exercises. Projects that allow the development and acquisition of knowledge inherent to the project form / function and methodology. The main steps of a design process: problem definition, idea creation, experimentation and the final solution.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

    A combination of expository and case study methodologies should be employed to ensure effective teaching and learning, including theorical contents, projects, and study visits. The Continuous Assessment process should consist of a minimum of two exercises that cover the following elements: 1. Each programmatic content should have exercises for practical application. 2. Practical projects that simulate real-world market scenarios. 3. Before each exercise, An initial briefing covering objectives, methods, timeline, and recommended bibliography should be given. 4. Each project should have at least one intermediate assessment and a final assessment with an oral presentation in class. It should be noted that if a student's absences exceed 30% of the total teaching hours, they will fail the course (unless they have student worker status, are a highly competitive athlete, or have military status).

  • Assessment

    Assessment

    É uma disciplina teórico-prática que combina a exposição dos conteúdos programáticos com a elaboração de um projeto prático e com a integração de processos de tutoria em aula.

    1. A avaliação é contínua e baseia-se no desenvolvimento dos suportes de comunicação estática e animada do programa, combinada com exercícios exploratórios sobre metodologias do design. Só serão aceites trabalhos para avaliação quando entregues na data prevista.

    2. Ponderações:
    A) 40% | projeto individual: Logo e manual de normas;
    B) 30% | projeto de grupo: peças gráfica Composição visual bidimensional: Explorar e definir hierarquias, legibilidade e foco visual numa composição através da colocação, composição (orientação, proximidade e afastamento), escalas, tipografia (forma, dimensão, peso, orientação, entrelinha, maiúsculas e minúsculas), cor (recurso aos sete contrastes da cor que geram harmonia de acordo com Johannes Itten). Composição com linhas de diferentes expressões (rectas, curvas, quebradas, interrompidas) e formas geométricas simples (triângulos, quadrados, circulos e rectângulos).
    C) 30% | projeto individual: exercícios exploratórios sobre metodologias do design — apresentação de dossier de portefólio dos exercícios realizados em ambiente de aula.
    Nota: a nota individual do projeto de grupo (ponto B) terá em linha de conta a participação em sala, bem como o relatório de tarefas. As percentagens definidas no relatório serão vertidas na nota individual conforme a seguinte fórmula: (nota do projeto) x (percentagem de participação) x (nº de alunos do grupo), sendo que a nota individual do é no máximo superior a 1V da nota de projeto de grupo.

    3. Momentos de avaliação intercalares: 2 falhas implica a exclusão da avaliação contínua;

    4. Apresentação projetos: os momentos de apresentação são obrigatórias e presenciais, sendo a falta injustificada aos mesmo penalizada pela exclusão da fase projetual em causa;

    5. Acompanhamento projetos: projetos que não tenham o devido acompanhamento do professor serão excluídos da avaliação contínua.

    6. Exame de 2a época e época especial: projeto individual de entrega e apresentação presencial à hora do exame, com enunciado e ponderações semelhante ao do semestre; uma defesa técnica e estética insatisfatória do mesmo implica a exclusão da avaliação.

    ----

    This is a theoretical-practical course that combines the presentation of the syllabus with the development of a practical project and the integration of tutoring processes in class.

    1. Assessment is continuous and is based on the development of the programme's static and animated media, combined with exercises to stimulate creativity. Work will only be accepted for assessment when it is handed in on the due date.

    2. Weightings:
    A) 30% | individual project: Programme logo — standards sheet and project dossier;
    B) 30% | group project: graphic pieces Two-dimensional visual composition: Explore and define hierarchies, legibility and visual focus in a composition through placement, composition (orientation, proximity and distance), scales, typography (shape, size, weight, orientation, interline, uppercase and lowercase), color (use of the seven contrasts of color that generate harmony according to Johannes Itten). Composition with lines of different expressions (straight, curved, broken, interrupted) and simple geometric shapes (triangles, squares, circles and rectangles);
    C) 30% | individual project: exploratory exercises on design methodologies — presentation of a portfolio dossier of the exercises carried out in class.
    Note: the individual grade for the group project (point B) will take into account participation in class, as well as the task report. The percentages defined in the report will be reflected in the individual grade according to the following formula: (project grade) x (percentage of participation) x (number of students in the group), whereby the individual grade is at most 1V higher than the group project grade.

    3. Intermediate assessment moments: 2 failures means exclusion from continuous assessment;

    4. Project presentation: the presentation moments are compulsory and face-to-face, and unjustified absence from them is penalised by exclusion from the project phase in question;

    5. Monitoring projects: projects that are not properly monitored by the teacher will be excluded from the continuous assessment.

    6. 2nd season and special season exams: individual project to be delivered and presented in person at the time of the exam, with the same wording and weightings as the semester exam; an unsatisfactory technical and aesthetic defence of the project will result in exclusion from the assessment.
