André Cepeda is a Portuguese photographer whose work explores the transformations of the urban landscape, architecture, and the dynamics of contemporary society. A self-taught artist, he has developed a consistent photographic practice since 1999, characterised by the use of a large-format camera and a keen eye for the details and textures of urban everyday life.
His career includes several notable distinctions and recognitions: in 1999 he received a grant for an artistic residency at the Espace Photographique Contretype in Brussels; he was nominated for the EDP Foundation New Artists Award (2007) and the BES Photo Award (2010); selected for the prestigious Foam Paul Huf Award (2011) in Amsterdam; and awarded the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar/EGEAC Prize (2016), which included a residency at Residency Unlimited, New York. He also completed an artistic residency in São Paulo, supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and FAAP.
His work has been presented in leading international institutions, including MAAT and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Lisbon, the Serralves Museum in Porto, Benrubi Gallery and Fridman Gallery in New York, LE BAL in Paris, Haus der Photographie in Hamburg, Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, MASP in São Paulo, and the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Rio de Janeiro. He took part in the Portuguese representation at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale (2018) and was invited to photograph the 50th anniversary of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation buildings (2019).
Among his publications are Ballad of Today (Pierre von Kleist/MAAT, 2020), Rua Stan Getz (Pierre von Kleist, 2015), resulting from his Brazilian residency, Rien (Pierre von Kleist, 2012), selected for the European Photo Exhibition Award (2014), and Ontem (Le caillou bleu, 2010). He has also collaborated with Dafne Editora on Casas de Brasileiro (2015), Casa São Roque (2019), and São João de Deus (2019).
His work is represented in several public and private collections, both national and international.
