Class Developmental Biology

  • Presentation

    Presentation

Developmental biology studies embryonic development, the growth of a multicellular organism from the junction of two specialized cells: spermtozoid and oocyte, until adulthood. In this UC we, mainly, focus on the embryonic development. The UC is essential for this study cycle because it allows the understanding and application of concepts learnt in cell and molecular biology, for the formation of a multicellular organism.

    Syllabus

Teorical component: History, concepts and animal models in DB First Embryonic Stages: Fertilazation, Cleavage, Gastrulation Organization of tissues in vertebrates: Ectoderm; Mesoderm; Endoderm Specification of the axis anterior/posterior in Drosophila melanogaster Development of the tetrapod limb Sex determination in mammals Practical component: Chicken: egg structures; observation and collection of chicken embryo at different developmental stages Immunostaining Technique in embryos of chiken and mouse models Poster/Oral communications presentation/Scientific paper discussion of several animal models in DB.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The student will be expected to understand the complexity and the network of interactions that occur during the development of an organism; comprehend the meaning and causes of cell differentiation and morphogenesis and apply them to various areas of biology. In the laboratory, the student should be able to manipulate chick and mouse embryos and use them in techniques such as immunostaining (fluorescence and/or -histochemistry); observation and manipulation of various stages of embryonic development; understanding and discussion scientific papers. At the end of the semester the student should be able to comprehend cell differentiation and its interaction in several animal models, as well as identify the embryonic developmental stages of the chick and mouse embryo and the respective structures in each stage and to perform the immunostaining technique.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

The curricular unit has two components: Lectures (50%) and Practical classes (50%). Lectures are given using audiovisual media to support what is spoken in class. When available short videos are shown to illustrate early cellular events of development. Practical classes are taken in a laboratory and are mandatory (students must do 12 of 15 lab classes). Fertilized chicken eggs are used as a model of developmental biology, embryos are collected at different stages of development. Thawed mouse embryos are also used in different stages of development for observation of different development model. Both embryo types are used inimmonostaining, results are observed in a microscope.

    50%
