Class Introduction to Design

  • Presentation

    Presentation

    The UC aims to teach the basic principles of a Communication Design project. It seeks to develop aesthetic, conceptual and technical criteria that will allow the development of the graphic content of a television program. It covers the areas of visual identity, dissemination (on screen and printed), as well as animated graphics for television broadcast, such as separators and oracles.

  • Syllabus

    Syllabus

    1. Fundamentals of Communication Design for the development and application of graphic content necessary for the dissemination and production of TV programmes: - Design methodology aimed at developing graphic content for the identity and dissemination of television content on screen and in print; - Design methodology aimed at developing graphic content for Motion Graphics; - Fundamentals of typography - families, structure, design, application; - Composition fundamentals - shape/background, symmetry/symmetry, proportion, balance and rhythm; - Colour fundamentals - systems and harmonies. 2. Fundamental techniques and tools associated with vector design and image editing software, which are necessary for a print and screen communication project. 3. Practical project: idealisation and application of graphic content for the promotion and production of a television programme.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    The main aim of the course is to assimilate and apply the basic principles of Communication Design applied to the communication and visual identity of a television programme in print and on screen. In order to fulfil this objective, students should acquire and demonstrate the following skills: - Recognise and coherently apply Communication Design concepts for print and animated graphics, in the areas of typography, colour, image, static and animated composition; - Use a project-adapted methodology to develop the graphic content needed to publicise the programme. - Skilfully apply the fundamental techniques and tools of vector drawing, graphics animation and image editing software necessary for the correct expression of the design concept; - Execution of the graphic content required for the semester's transversal project.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

    This is a theoretical-practical course that combines an expository format with in-class tutoring processes, where the application and development of knowledge is based on the development of a multi-camera audiovisual project that cuts across five courses of the semester.

  • Assessment

    Assessment

    É uma disciplina teóric-prática que combina a exposição dos conteúdos programáticos com a elaboração de um projeto prático e com a integração de processos de tutoria em aula.

    1. A avaliação é contínua e baseia-se no desenvolvimento dos suportes de comunicação estática e animada do programa, combinada com exercícios exploratórios sobre metodologias do design. Só serão aceites trabalhos para avaliação quando entregues na data prevista.

    2. Ponderações:
    A) 30% | projeto individual: Logo do programa — folha de normas e dossier de projeto;
    B) 40% | projeto de grupo: peças gráfica e animadas se suporte ao projeto audiovisual multicâmara transversal — peças a definir com os alunos;
    C) 30% | projeto individual: exercícios exploratórios sobre metodologias do design — apresentação de dossier de portefólio dos exercícios realizados em ambiente de aula.
    Nota: a nota individual do projeto de grupo (ponto B) terá em linha de conta a participação em sala, bem como o relatório de tarefas. As percentagens definidas no relatório serão vertidas na nota individual conforme a seguinte fórmula: (nota do projeto) x (percentagem de participação) x (nº de alunos do grupo), sendo que a nota individual do é no máximo superior a 1V da nota de projeto de grupo.

    3. Momentos de avaliação intercalares: 2 falhas implica a exclusão da avaliação contínua;

    4. Apresentação projetos: as momentos de apresentação são obrigatórias e presenciais, sendo a falta injustificada aos mesmo penalizada pela exclusão da fase projetual em causa;

    5. Acompanhamento projetos: projetos que não tenham o devido acompanhamento do professor serão excluídos da avaliação contínua.

    6. Exame de 2a época e época especial: projeto individual de entrega e apresentação presencial à hora do exame, com enunciado e ponderações semelhante ao do semestre; uma defesa técnica e estética insatisfatória do mesmo implica a exclusão da avaliação.

    ----

    This is a theoretical-practical course that combines the presentation of the syllabus with the development of a practical project and the integration of tutoring processes in class.

    1. Assessment is continuous and is based on the development of the programme's static and animated media, combined with exercises to stimulate creativity. Work will only be accepted for assessment when it is handed in on the due date.

    2. Weightings:
    A) 30% | individual project: Programme logo — standards sheet and project dossier;
    B) 40% | group project: graphic and animated pieces to support the transversal multi-camera audiovisual project — pieces to be defined with the students;
    C) 30% | individual project: exploratory exercises on design methodologies — presentation of a portfolio dossier of the exercises carried out in class.
    Note: the individual grade for the group project (point B) will take into account participation in class, as well as the task report. The percentages defined in the report will be reflected in the individual grade according to the following formula: (project grade) x (percentage of participation) x (number of students in the group), whereby the individual grade is at most 1V higher than the group project grade.

    3. Intermediate assessment moments: 2 failures means exclusion from continuous assessment;

    4. Project presentation: the presentation moments are compulsory and face-to-face, and unjustified absence from them is penalised by exclusion from the project phase in question;

    5. Monitoring projects: projects that are not properly monitored by the teacher will be excluded from the continuous assessment.

    6. Artificial intelligence: the use of artificial intelligence applications at any stage of the project must be previously validated by the teacher and the development process (prompts and intermediate images/texts) must be documented in the project dossier and the respective intermediate delivery stages.

    7. 2nd season and special season exams: individual project to be delivered and presented in person at the time of the exam, with the same wording and weightings as the semester exam; an unsatisfactory technical and aesthetic defence of the project will result in exclusion from the assessment.
