Economic and social component - Waste prevention:Policies and strategies.Waste Management Hierarchy. - Waste production and characterization: Quantitative, techniques and methods. - Collection and transportation of waste. Facilities and equipment.Vehicles and collection systems.Shipping.Transfer Stations.Analysis and optimization of circuits. - Screening and processing.Unit operations.Separation and mechanical treatment. - Technologies for solid waste treatment:Organic Valorization. Composting and Anaerobic Digestion.Fundamentals, systems and process factors. Energy valorization.Incineration: factors involved, systems and monitoring. Sanitary landfill.Classification and planning.Basic reactions and processes.Operation and maintenance. Mechanical-Biological Treatment. Recycling Companies - Specific Flows.

Objectives
Mastery of concepts and methods related to municipal solid waste and industrial waste at all stages of its management, from prevention to final disposal. Knowledge of the several technologies of waste treatment. Knowledge about the management of specific waste streams. Practical knowledge of the national reality in terms of waste management, for example through technical visits. Practical exercises on the thematic approached.

The classes follow 2 types: (1) Theoretical classes (T) where the basic concepts are presented, and how they can be applied to specific cases is illustrated; (2) Practical classes (P), where case studies are presented and discussed on which students have to prepare reports with a critical approach
