    Solid waste treatment technologies: Organic Valorization. Composting and Anaerobic digestion. Energy recovery. Incineration: factors involved, systems and monitoring. Landfill. Classification and planning. Operation and maintenance. Mechanical-Biological Treatment. Water and effluent treatment technologies: Physical-Chemical Treatment: Concept of treatment chain (ETA, WWTP, ETEI). Water reuse. Biological Treatment: Types of aerobic processes for removing organic matter and nitrification. Control of processes and operational problems. Types of anaerobic processes for removing organic matter. Nutrient, nitrogen and phosphorus removal processes. Contaminated soil treatment strategies: confinement / isolation of the contaminated area; in situ decontamination, ex situ decontamination (on-site and off-site); physical, chemical methods; thermal; solidification / stabilization and biological methods. Bioremediation and phytoremediation.

    Objectives

    Application of engineering principles to solutions for the treatment of environmental problems. Students should understand the technical systems and know treatment and dimensioning methods. The application of these concepts focuses on techniques for treating solid waste, liquid effluents and contaminated soils.

    Teaching methodologies

    This course is based on different theoretical classes, where the fundamentals of sustainable technology are explained, that are complemented by analysis of case studies and problem solving. The course also has a practical component where students apply and develop some of the theoretical concepts.

    Assessment

    A avaliação contínua é efetuada através de duas frequências a realizar durante o semestre cuja média ponderada deverá ser igual ou superior a 10 valores ou uma frequência.

    Caso o aluno não obtenha aprovação na média das 2 frequências, o aluno deverá ir a exame de recurso.

    A componente teórica corresponde a 60% da nota final da UC. A avaliação compreende ainda um relatório dos trabalhos teórico-práticos (30%, dos quais 40% correspondem ao documento escrito e 60% à discussão do mesmo) e apresentação de um trabalho sobre tema à escolha na área de conhecimento da UC (10%). Os alunos têm de obter um mínimo de 10 valores na componente teórica e teórico-prática para aprovação na disciplina.

    Continuous assessment is carried out through two tests during the semester, the weighted average of which must be equal to or greater than 10 points, or one test.

    If the student does not pass the average of the two tests, they must take a resit exam.

    The theoretical component corresponds to 60% of the final grade for the course unit. The assessment also includes a report on theoretical-practical work (30%, of which 40% corresponds to the written document and 60% to the discussion of the same) and the presentation of a paper on a topic of their choice in the area of knowledge of the CU (10%). Students must obtain a minimum of 10 points in the theoretical and theoretical-practical components to pass the course.
