This course unit focuses on the principles, techniques and practices of editing texts in Portuguese, covering linguistic revision, standard correctness, textual coherence and cohesion, as well as the adaptation of texts to different contexts and audiences. It also explores the stages of the editorial process, from the preparation of manuscripts to final proofreading. The unit contributes to the development of skills in writing, revision and textual refinement, promoting the accurate and effective use of Portuguese as a tool for communication, knowledge production and cultural transmission.

1. Theoretical issues: concept of editing and the editor's role; types of editions; concept of original and testimony; objectives and methods of a critical edition; popular editions; methodological principles and practices; 2. Case-study: comparison of different editions of O livro de Cesário Verde (or another text of wider circulation and mandatory reading in school); 3. Case-study: different testimonies of O livro da vertuosa benfeytoria (or another with multiple testimonies and manuscript tradition); 4. Case-study: critical edition of an excerpt of a text and popular edition of a text chosen by the students.
