Class Law

In this curricular unit, students are exposed to a specific characterization of Law in general and legal norms in particular, as well as the rules inherent to their application. Additionally, this unit promotes the combination of theoretical and practical knowledge of Law and its relation to the real aspects of society, with specific inclusion of people from various age groups and the consequences of human relationships when Law is called to resolve them. Knowledge of the various judicial protagonists and the judicial organization (structure and functioning of the Courts) is also important. Moreover, this curricular unit promotes the debate and resolution of issues that may arise for professionals. It explores all legal aspects, ethics, criticism, creativity, and the ability to solve complex problems, which are crucial aspects in any professional field.

1 - Introduction to the Study of Law - basic concepts. 2 - Regime of singular legal personality. 3 - Protection of the Law: self-help and hetero-help and the prohibition of private vengeance. Compulsory measures (restitutive protective means and legal sanctions). 4 - Legal regime of evidence and consequences (burden of proof; evidence by presumption; prohibition of evidence; means of evidence). 5 - The rights of children and young people: civil protective law (promotion and protection) and criminal protective law, educational protective law and protection of children and young people who are victims of crimes. 6 - Domestic violence: supporting legislation.

This discipline is designed to promote the practical application of theoretical concepts and the development of students' skills. Thus, the lectures present the theoretical concepts and their practical applications with the analysis and discussion of case law, as well as recent news from the media that pertain to aspects of interest for this Curricular Unit, encouraging the analysis of practical cases and/or practical exercises conducted in the classroom.
