The Graduate Program in Teaching Portuguese as a Non-Native Language in Multilingual Contexts addresses the challenges posed by the growing linguistic and cultural diversity in Portuguese schools, where teaching Portuguese as a non-native language is now widespread. The diversity of linguistic backgrounds, proficiency levels, and school experiences requires skills that go beyond traditional language instruction. This graduate program prepares teachers to assess students¿ linguistic profiles and needs, plan differentiated instruction strategies, develop teaching materials, evaluate student learning, and promote students¿ integration into the school and the community. Grounded in recent research and featuring a strong practical component, it addresses the challenges of multilingual educational contexts.

Holders of a bachelor¿s degree or higher academic degree in the fields of Education, Languages, Humanities, or related fields. Candidates with an academic, scientific, or professional background deemed relevant by the graduate program coordination may also be admitted, in accordance with applicable regulations.

Graduates will be able to take on or expand their roles in: - Teaching Portuguese as a Non-Native Language in public and private schools; - Teaching Portuguese to migrant students, refugees, and newcomers; - Teaching Portuguese as a Heritage Language; - Language centers and institutions of higher education; - Portuguese schools abroad; - Development of teaching materials and educational resources; - Coordination of language education and inclusion projects; - Teacher training; - Consulting in language and multicultural education.

The assessment emphasizes a continuous approach, placing value on participation in classroom activities, the completion of individual and group assignments, case studies, the development of teaching resources, and the design of intervention projects applied to real-world teaching contexts. Each course module defines its own assessment tools in accordance with the learning objectives.
