AI, Ethics and the Social Future Discussed by Contemporary Philosophers
The meeting brings together two philosophers with different perspectives who seek to interpret technological megatrends
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
The reflection on the ethics of Artificial Intelligence and the impact of technological megatrends brought together Markus Gabriel, from the University of Bonn, and Yasuo Deguchi, from the University of Kyoto, at Lusófona University – Lisbon University Centre.
The meeting, held on 26 November, promoted a dialogue between two of the most influential voices in contemporary philosophy, bringing together Western and Eastern approaches to the social transformation driven by AI.
The conversation addressed the main themes of the authors’ recent research, including new moral realism and the “WE turn”. Markus Gabriel reflected on the need to rethink ethical foundations in a rapidly evolving technological context, while Yasuo Deguchi presented the concept of the “We-Turn”, which interprets AI systems as elements integrated into social networks rather than as autonomous entities.
Inspired by a book soon to be published in Japanese, “What Philosophy Can Do for the Society of the Future: New Moral Realism and the Turn towards ‘We’”, the debate reinforced the importance of bringing philosophy and technology closer together in order to understand contemporary challenges and to guide responsible practices in digital innovation.
