Carlos Queiroz receives Doctor Honoris Causa from Lusófona University

On September 19, 2024, Lusófona University - Lisbon University Centre, honoured Carlos Queiroz with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, recognising his global career in football and his role in the development of new generations of athletes.

Carlos Queiroz, who contributed to the development of football in countries such as Portugal, Iran, Colombia, and South Africa, was distinguished for his contribution to sport and the training of young athletes, standing out for his dedication to innovation and education in football throughout his career.

During the event, several figures highlighted the impact of Carlos Queiroz in sport and academia, emphasising his global vision and commitment to human development. In his thank-you speech, Carlos Queiroz himself was emotional and grateful for the distinction, stating: “Today, I look at football and I am happy.” Queiroz also took the opportunity to pay tribute to his father, who was present at the ceremony, by saying: “He never let me walk alone.”

The programme of the ceremony included an Academic Procession, musical performances, speeches by the Honourable Rector, Professor José Bragança de Miranda, and the President and Administrator of COFAC. The Director of FEFD, Professor Jorge Proença, justified the proposal for the Doctor Honoris Causa award, stating that “this title recognises the work done in the development of football.” The Academic Patron, Professor Júlio Garganta, delivered the tribute to the new Doctor, followed by the solemn award of the title by the Rector and a speech by Carlos Queiroz.

In a special moment, a video message from Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, surprised the audience. Gianni Infantino highlighted Queiroz's career with the following words: “He coached eleven teams across five continents. He coached seven national teams and participated in four World Cups. He is the father of the golden generation. Thank you for everything you have done for our beloved sport.”

The ceremony celebrated the sporting achievements and impact of Carlos Queiroz on the development of new generations in football. The awarding of the Doctor Honoris Causa reflects Lusófona University's commitment to recognising individuals with professional, social, and cultural impact on a global scale.
