Conference discussed Gallaecia’s legacy in the north of the Iberian Peninsula

On 20 April, the conference “Gallaecia: the utopia of a region? Political and cultural identity” took place at Lusófona University - Porto University Centre. The event brought together academics and researchers for a reflection on the historical roots and cultural continuities of ancient Gallaecia and its impact on identity construction in the north of the Iberian Peninsula.

The initiative stemmed from the desire to promote knowledge about the Galicia–Northern Portugal Euroregion, a concept formalised in 2008 and associated with the historical legacy of the ancient Roman province of Gallaecia. This territory, initially inhabited by the Gallaeci peoples and later integrated into the Roman Empire, developed administrative, urban and cultural structures that deeply shaped the organisation of the region.

Lecturer Célia Taborda explained that the aim of this event was to promote the northern region of the Iberian Peninsula. This region possesses its own historical and cultural identity, yet remains little known among younger generations.

The Deputy Director of the PhD in Communication and Activisms at Lusófona University also added that, despite the current separation, “there is still something that connects us to this region”.

The discussion helped consolidate reflection on Gallaecia as a historical and cultural reference, highlighting the importance of continuing to study and disseminate this legacy within the contemporary academic and social context.
