First Virtual Production Class at Lusófona University
Virtual Production comes to Lusófona University, strengthening training in emerging technologies in the audiovisual sector
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
On 23 September 2026, the first module of the Virtual Production course began. As part of the European Cutting Edges programme run by FilmEU, which aims to adapt and prepare the curricula of the six European higher education institutions for the technological disruption driven by Virtual Production and artificial intelligence in the film industry, this module marks the beginning of knowledge dissemination and the training of new students in the field of real-time technologies.
Set in the new Eduardo Serra Studio at Lusófona University, equipped with state-of-the-art computing systems and a 9 x 4-metre LED wall, students have the opportunity to experiment with and learn every aspect of this art under the guidance of João Aguiar and with teaching from David Stump and Rodolfo Anes Silveira.
This is a first step towards promoting and developing new skills in the real-time compositing of three-dimensional environments with live performance, as well as an initial step towards addressing the skills gap in the Portuguese film industry.
The integration of Virtual Production into Lusófona University's educational offering represents an important step in updating curricula and developing skills aligned with the technological transformation of the audiovisual sector. This initiative brings students and lecturers closer to emerging tools and methodologies, promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthens the links between teaching, research and the film industry, helping to train professionals equipped to meet the challenges of the future.
