Lusófona University PhD candidate conducts Scientific Research in the USA
The research about technological innovation applied to logistics will be carried out by Gilson Ferreira in partnership with the University of Memphis
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
Lusófona University strengthens its strategy of scientific internationalisation, applied research and international academic cooperation through the mobility of PhD candidate Gilson da Silva Ferreira, within the framework of the PhD in Computer Science, supervised by Professor Rui Ribeiro, PhD.
Within the context of this PhD programme, Gilson Ferreira will carry out part of his research in the United States of America, in partnership with the University of Memphis and the FedEx Institute of Technology (FIT), one of the world’s leading institutions in technological innovation applied to logistics and global supply chains.
Research Focused on the Next Generation of Logistics Systems
Under the scientific supervision of Professor Ribeiro, the research focuses on the study of the technical, organisational and economic impacts of 6G networks in the context of Industry 5.0, with particular emphasis on the evolution of intelligent, autonomous and data-driven logistics systems.
The research work addresses critical topics such as:
- Application of 6G networks to global logistics ecosystems;
- Integration of Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) in transport, warehousing and distribution operations;
- Models of digital governance, risk management and technological maturity;
- Assessment of the impact of advanced digitalisation on the efficiency, resilience and sustainability of supply chains.
This approach reflects the scientific line promoted by the PhD programme and by Lusófona University, based on the interconnection between technology, management, innovation and social impact.
International Mobility and Applied Scientific Collaboration
The PhD candidate’s mobility is part of a structured scientific collaboration programme, with an initial phase consisting of a 45-day on-site research immersion in the city of Memphis, which began in December 2025. During this period, Gilson Ferreira will be integrated into several research clusters at the FedEx Institute of Technology, namely in the areas of:
- Intelligent and digital logistics;
- Autonomous systems and electric mobility;
- Cybersecurity and resilience of critical infrastructures;
- Smart Cities and urban–logistics integration.
This experience will enable direct contact with researchers, technological laboratories, real operational data and pilot projects, strengthening the applied and international character of the doctoral research.
Strengthening Internationalisation and the Research Impact at Lusófona University
For Lusófona University, this mobility represents a concrete example of its commitment to the internationalisation of research, the enhancement of doctoral studies and the establishment of strategic partnerships with academic and technological institutions of global reference.
The supervision of Professor Rui Ribeiro, PhD ensures the scientific alignment of the research with the objectives of the doctoral programme, promoting an integrated approach between academic research, technological innovation and the real challenges of the digital economy. The work developed within the scope of this partnership will contribute to advancing knowledge in the fields of 6G networks and future logistics systems, while simultaneously strengthening the international presence and scientific positioning of Lusófona University.
