PISA 2025: Results and New Questions for Research

On Wednesday, 16 September, Lusófona University continued its academic work on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) through a workshop organised by CeiED — the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Development.

Dedicated to the theme “PISA 2025 — Results and Open Research Questions”, the event examined the latest data and the questions they raise for educational research. Moderated by lecturer and researcher António Teodoro, the programme began with lecturer Vítor Duarte Teodoro, who addressed the performance of Portuguese students in the context of the global PISA 2025 results. This was followed by lecturer Regina Duarte, who analysed the literacy results and the questions that may guide future research.

The discussion took as its starting point the decline recorded in mathematics and reading, which brings Portugal closer to levels observed in 2006, seeking to understand what the data reveal and which aspects remain to be clarified.

The reflection continued with lecturer Teresa Teixeira Lopo, who presented the perspective “PISA: a Scientific (Counter)Model in Comparative and International Education”. Held in a hybrid format, the workshop explored different interpretations of the PISA 2025 results and the research possibilities suggested by the data, combining an analysis of Portuguese students’ performance with a broader reflection on the role of PISA tests in educational research.
