President of Cape Verde receives Honorary Doctorate from Lusófona University

On 6 October, Lusófona University awarded the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, in recognition of his political leadership, dedication to public service, and contribution to strengthening democracy and cooperation among Portuguese-speaking countries.

During the ceremony, held at the José Araújo Auditorium of Lusófona University - Lisbon University Centre, the values of leadership, humanism, and commitment to education and sustainable development that define the honouree’s career were highlighted. The distinction acknowledges José Maria Neves’s remarkable path, marked by his commitment to development, social justice, and the strengthening of relations among Portuguese-speaking nations. Throughout his career, the Cape Verdean Head of State has stood out as a key figure in promoting cooperation, dialogue, and cohesion among Lusophone peoples.

The Rector, Professor José Bragança de Miranda, and the Administrator and President of COFAC, Professor Manuel de Almeida Damásio, opened the formal session, underlining the significance of the tribute. Professor Isabel Babo, representing the Rectorate, presented the justification for the Doctor Honoris Causa proposal, emphasising José Maria Neves’s contribution to democracy and Lusophone cooperation.

The tribute speech to the new Doctor was delivered by the Academic Patron, His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who praised the honouree’s life path and his commitment to the values of freedom, solidarity, and friendship between Portugal and Cape Verde.

In his address, José Maria Neves expressed gratitude for the honour and highlighted the role of higher education institutions in building fairer and more inclusive societies. He further stressed the importance of education as a tool for individual and collective emancipation and as an essential pillar for the development of nations.

The conferment of this honorary title reflects Lusófona University’s recognition of those who, through merit and example, inspire future generations and contribute to the advancement of the Lusophone world.
