On 20 March, the Salão Nobre of Lusófona University - Porto University Centre opened its doors to the Lusófona University Day to celebrate its 22nd anniversary, bringing together students, academic staff, collaborators and guests for an afternoon of reflection, celebration and academic sharing.
The event featured addresses by the Rector of Lusófona University, José Bragança de Miranda, by Natália Pereira on behalf of Manuel de Almeida Damásio, Administrator and President of the founding body, and by João Oliveira, President of the Students’ Union of Lusófona University - Porto University Centre, thus highlighting the importance of collaboration across the entire academic community for the success of the institution, “for collective and individual development”, as stated by Professor José Bragança de Miranda.
One of the central moments of the event was the presentation by José Braga Vasconcelos, Director of the Department of Computer Engineering and Information Systems, on “The security of knowledge and science and the impact of Artificial Intelligence on university education”. The lecture addressed how Artificial Intelligence is transforming learning, as well as the associated ethical challenges and the need to safeguard academic knowledge.
The Sapiência Address was delivered by Isabel Alexandra Ferreira Nunes, Director of the Instituto de Defesa Nacional, who spoke on “European Defence: A Strategic Challenge in a Changing World”. Isabel Ferreira Nunes highlighted the relevance of universities in promoting a culture of defence and citizenship, noting that they are essential “to raise students’ awareness of security and defence issues, the problems affecting the world, and the implications this has for governments, societies, states and international organisations themselves”.
The event continued with the awarding of Caixa Geral de Depósitos prizes, merit scholarships, medals and recognition diplomas, acknowledging the effort and talent of academic staff, students and collaborators.
The 22nd University Day thus established itself as a space for celebration, reflection and anticipation of academic and social challenges, promoting dialogue among all members of the academic community. Text edited by Susana A. Oliveira
