ULusófona hosts screening of the film “Feminismos: A Liberdade de Ser”

On 4 March, the documentary “Feminismos: A Liberdade de Ser” was screened at Lusófona University - Porto University Centre, proposing a reflection on the history and contemporary relevance of feminist movements in Portugal.

The documentary, directed, produced and written by lecturers Ana Sofia Pereira and Vanessa Ribeiro Rodrigues, was developed במסגרת the research project FEMglocal – Glocal Feminist Movements: Interactions and Contradictions. The project seeks to create space for different experiences and perspectives, contributing to the construction of a collective memory of feminist struggles in Portugal and to the recognition of stories that often remain less visible or silenced.

The film follows the preparations for and the demonstration of International Women’s Day, celebrated on 8 March, using this context as a starting point for a journey between the past and present of feminist struggles in the country. Throughout the narrative, 28 voices from different generations, backgrounds and paths are brought together, sharing experiences of activism, research and civic participation.

The work combines personal testimonies with footage from the Feminist Strike in several cities, audiovisual archives, photographs and materials produced by activists.

The result is a plural narrative that highlights different forms of participation in demonstrations, including contributions from members of associations such as União de Mulheres Alternativa e Resposta (UMAR) and individuals who identify with multiple gender identities.

During the session, Ana Sofia Pereira, Deputy Director of the Bachelor's degree in Applied Communication at Lusófona University - Porto University Centre, highlighted the importance of promoting spaces for reflection on feminisms within academia, stating, “at a time when we see society becoming increasingly polarised, with growing misunderstandings between people, and increasing confusion about what the term feminism and feminisms actually mean, I believe it is specifically within academia, with students, that we can begin to make a difference”.

The screening, promoted by the Faculty of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies (FCAATI), in collaboration with the Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture and New Technologies (CICANT), reinforces the connection between scientific research, audiovisual production and public debate on contemporary social issues.
