The Queima das Fitas is an academic tradition in Portugal that celebrates the end of the academic year for university students, usually celebrated in May. It originated in Coimbra in the 19th century when a group of students decided to hold a party to celebrate the end of the school year, later spreading to other university cities, such as Porto, Lisbon and Braga. During the party, students participate in various activities, such as academic processions, serenades, concerts and dances.
