Social Work: intervention, rights, and closeness to those facing vulnerability, inequality, and real-life challenges in everyday life
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
Social Work Day
Not all help is visible.
But there are professionals who are exactly where life gets complicated.
Today marks Social Work Day.
Social work is not just “helping people”.
It is about intervening in real situations: poverty, domestic violence, social exclusion, addictions, support for the elderly, at-risk children, and migrants.
Social workers operate in hospitals, schools, courts, municipalities, and NGOs. They are present wherever people are vulnerable.
This field gained momentum in the 20th century, especially after the world wars, when it became clear that rebuilding cities was not enough — lives needed to be rebuilt too.
In Portugal, social work is essential for access to state support and for mediating between citizens and institutions.
It is not charity.
It is a matter of rights and social justice.
And often, it is the difference between someone falling… or managing to get back up.
