In this curricular unit, the Fundamentals of Economics and Management are addressed with the purpose of assuring the professional who will work in the Engenharia do Ambiente the knowledge that allows him / her an overview of what the management activity is, what it is for, and how it can be processed in various organizational contexts. Namely for the approach that contemplates the various areas of management (production, accounting, human resources, finance and marketing).

1. Fundamentals of economics and business management: core concepts and types of organisation. 2. Organisational theories and interaction with the external environment. 3. Organisational strategy: planning, objectives, and competitive positioning. 4. Organisational structure and models of governance. 5. Human resource management: functions, competencies, and organisational development. 6. The concept of the learning organisation. 7. Fundamentals of marketing: segmentation, positioning, and communication. 8. Principles of accounting and finance. 9. Operations management: planning, efficiency, and sustainability. 10. Inventory and logistics management: methods and impact on the value chain.

Objectives
Objectives
The curricular unit aims to provide students fundamental concepts of economics and management. This provides an overview of the functioning of the economy and its importance for all actors involved. It is also intended that students master the main concepts of Management and have an integrated view of their different areas. In terms of knowledge, skills and competences to be acquired, the student should be able to interpret concepts, theories and policies associated with the functioning of the economy and the overall management of companies. At the end of the course, students should: 1. Understand the functioning of the economy, framed by the principles of the law of supply and demand; 2. Understand the different functional areas of Management and how they interconnect. 3. Be able to apply a set of concepts, methods and management tools. 4. Be able to apply the methods and tools of Management to the analys is and discussion of cases.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
The course adopts an active, student-centred methodology that fosters critical analysis and practical application of concepts. Classes combine theoretical exposition, text discussion, case studies, and problem-solving. Collaborative work is encouraged, supported by digital platforms to promote autonomy and critical reflection. An interdisciplinary approach and exposure to circular economy best practices are prioritised. Assessment comprises three components: seminar (25%), case study (25%), and individual test (50%). Group work is assessed individually and presented in class (15 minutes per group, followed by discussion). The report must not exceed 2,000 words. Emphasis is placed on analytical rigour, autonomy, and the ability to link theory with practice.
