Class Genetics

  • Presentation

    Presentation

Genetics studies genes and how characteristics are transmitted from generation to generation. Biochemestry studies cellular chemical reactions. Hence, this Curricular Unit is fundamental for this study cycle, giving the basis for a better understanding of cellular chemical processes. In the theorical component students will be introduced to basic concepts of gene expression, which will be able to apply in the lab (pratical component) using several methodoligies of DNA analysis.

    Syllabus

I Genetic material struture and organization: DNA and cromatine information transmission: DNA replcation and chromosome structure as a phsysical vehicle of genetic information, structure and funtion of replication origins, centromeres and telomeres II Genetic expression processes transcription and translation: transcription regulation via regulatory proteins and conformation III Eukariotes genome constitution IV Genetic information innovation processes: mutation and DNA repair mechanisms; meiotic recombination and transposable elements V Classical genetic analysis and interconnection with meiotic division: independent gene segregation (multiple alleles, lethal alleles, sex-linked genes interaction) and genetic connection VI Basic molecular genetic techniques: DNA extration from eukariotic cells nucleic acid analysis with spectrophtometry and electrophoresis
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The main objective of this curricular unit is the acquisition of basic knowledge in the scientific field of Genetics allowing: understand the molecular basis of genetics (including replication, transcription, translation and mutation processes); understand the basic concerns of gene expression (including transcription, translation and differential transcription regulation); understand the mechanisms of heredity. It is intended for the student to acquire a conceptual framework in the area of Genetics that allows and promotes its use in different fields of Biochemistry.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

Teaching methods are mostly expository in theoretical classes promoting the development of critical analysis for applying the acquired knowledge in different contexts, through discussion of scietific papers. Laboratory classes are designed to learn laboratory techniques for DNA collection and analysis, and also problem solving with teacher guidance. Both class types are designed to be given in a classroon/laboratory, e-learning, may be used in exceptional cases for theorical classes.

  • Assessment

    Assessment

For approval in this curricular unit the student must have at least 10 values (out of 20). Students
    may either do continuous evaluation:

    • theorical (50%): two written tests (50%+50%)
    • laboratory (50%): participation (5%),written test (45%), oral presentation - poster format (group-30%), and quiz (individual - 20%)

Final classification through continuous evaluation is obtain by averaging the different evaluation
elements. However the minimum grade to each written evaluation is 8 values. Or do a final exam,
which is also the possibility for those students that did not reach the minimum required (10).
