This course analyses Portugal's integration into the European Union from its accession in 1986 to the present, combining historical, political and institutional perspectives with a strong applied component. The course is structured around a central project: the organisation of an academic conference marking the 40th anniversary of Portugal's accession to the European Union, designed and implemented by students. The course adopts active learning methodologies, open lectures and tutorial sessions, fostering both substantive knowledge about the EU and the development of analytical, communication and organisational skills.

Objectives
Objectives
By the end of the course, students should be able to: Understand the process of Portugal's accession to the EU and its main political, economic and social effects; Critically analyse the Europeanisation of Portugal and its limits; Discuss Portugal's role in European crises and contemporary debates on sovereignty and integration; Assess the main future challenges facing the EU and Portugal's position within them; Produce and communicate academic knowledge in a public and collective setting.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
The course adopts innovative teaching methodologies centred on active learning and project-based learning. These include open lectures with external guest speakers, the screening and discussion of documentaries, tutorial sessions providing continuous supervision, and the organisation of an academic conference as the central axis of the course. These methodologies foster active student engagement, the development of analytical, communication and organisational skills, and a consistent articulation between theory and practice.
