In this CU solid notions of reactivity and of the necessary skills for the elaboration of the mechanisms associated to the reactions involved in the different classes of compounds taught, will be acquired. The importance of the area of organic synthesis will also be addressed and skills will be acquired to understand the interconversions of functional groups and the relevance of this theme in natural products. Fundamental capacities for conducting laboratory reactions, will also be acquired and to understand the motives associated with performing certain practical procedures in the execution of reactions, treatment of reaction media, and the isolation and purification of organic compounds. This Curricular Unit (CU) is fundamental within the studies' cycle in which it is inserted, as it allows the acquisition of basic knowledge in the area of organic chemistry and which is essential for the natural products area.

Objectives
Objectives
The aim of this Curricular Unit is to provide students with fundamental concepts in Organic Chemistry, with particular emphasis on different applications in the area of natural bioactives. It is intended to provide the necessary skills to understand the different classes of organic compounds, with respect to their nature, reactivity/synthesis, properties and nomenclature. In tutorial classes, several experiments will be performed in order to apply the most representative reactions studied and training the student to carry out experimental techniques in organic chemistry, as well as the precautions to take in their implementation.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
The teaching includes several tools, based on presential teaching, (theoretical, theoretical-practical and laboratorial classes) and other non-presential tools (e.g. moodle). In the tutorial component, fundamental concepts of the program are detailed studied by performing representative reactions, learning experimental techniques used in Organic Chemistry, and solving pre-announced problems. Throughout the teaching of the UC, practical and demonstrative examples of the matter are used.

Assessment
60%
(B) Apresentação e discussão de cadernos de laboratório
30%
(C) Desempenho e participação nas aulas
10%
A avaliação contínua engloba:
Somatório Final = A (60%) + B (30%) + C (10%)
