Class Sustainable Development Models in Tourism

    This course will explore the historical context, development and structure of sustainably managed tourism and the models used within this type of development, such as ecotourism and creative tourism. Core elements of this course will include a discussion on tourism impacts (economic, social and environmental), issues of sustainability, performance measurement & monitoring, 'eco-tourism' and other 'alternative forms' of tourism. Business and tourism management implications will be discussed. The engagement of local communities in tourism development decisions will be analyzed. Tourism development models that aim towards the sustainable use of natural resources will be introduced, giving international examples. This course is structured according to the UNWTO Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how these relate to tourism development models.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    Students who successfully complete the course will be able to:

    • Examine and critique principles of sustainable development and their implications for tourism
    • Identify, critique and discuss the role of government and other stakeholders involved in ecotourism/sustainable nature tourism provision
    • Understand the principles of sustainable tourism development models and their connection to the wider tourism industry
    • Identify issues associated with sustainable tourism visitor operations and other relevant settings (e.g. indigenous or community development)
    • Get an understanding of how to use sustainable tourism tools, including: 1)Sustainability Indicators, 2) Environmental Impact Assessment, 3) Life Cycle Assessment, 4) Ecological Footprints, 5) Carrying Capacity,6) Limits of Acceptable Change;
    • Critique sustainable tourism operations and management alongside a variety of international case studies of sustainable tourism businesses
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Digital pedagogy tools like Padlet and Menti and Escape rooms will be used and project-bsed learning methods will be applied to evaluated activities. Student reflection and discussion will be stimulated using various techniques such as team-based learning.
