Presentation
The CU aims to equip students with an understanding of the main concepts and dimensions of social inequalities. Throughout the CU, students will explore the structural causes of inequalities and their impacts on society, with a particular focus on the Portuguese reality. The CU will also address the interaction between inequality, development, and social well-being, as well as examine the role of public policies in reducing these disparities. With both a practical and theoretical approach, students will be prepared to develop intervention strategies that promote social inclusion and well-being in various contexts.

Objectives
Objectives
By the end of the course unit, students should be able to: Distinguish between and critically examine the concepts of inequality, inclusion and social well-being, recognising their different dimensions and interrelationships. Critically analyse the structural and institutional mechanisms that produce and reproduce inequalities and their effects on living conditions. Interpret indicators and evidence on inequalities in Portugal, considering trends, differences between social groups and territorial disparities. Critically analyse public policies aimed at reducing inequalities and promoting inclusion and well-being, considering their objectives, outcomes and limitations. Design and justify social intervention strategies that promote social inclusion and enhance well-being in different contexts.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Teaching: Lecture-based and questioning methods, with student participation. Debates and discussions supported by guided readings, videos, podcasts and critical analysis of public policy cases. Assessment: Continuous assessment: 1) Individual assignment on a syllabus topic: 70% (50% for the written component and 20% for the oral discussion); 2) Individual critical reflection on a podcast: 20%; 3) Class participation: 10%. A final grade of at least 9.5 out of 20 is required to pass. Resit assessment: individual written assignment (70%) and oral discussion (30%), with a minimum final passing grade of 9.5 out of 20.
