    The CU Laboratory Techniques in Biochemistry aims to provide students with basic skills in laboratory work to enable the use of techniques common to all biochemistry laboratories. It aims to assist the student in the preparation of reports, automatic data acquisition, analysis and treatment of experimental data, graphical data presentation and methods of measuring some properties. It is a basic UC that serves to prepare students for more focused UCs on specific aspects of biochemistry. In this UC, students learn good laboratory practices associated with safe and correct practice. It provides a first approach to analysis and handling of data, preparation of solutions and basic chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques that will be used later in other UCs.

    1. Safety in the laboratory. Laboratory notebook.
    2. Basic principles of data analysis (2.1. Accuracy / precision, 2.2. Types of errors, 2.3. Significant
    figures, 2.4. Statistics and data analysis)
    3. Preparation of solutions.
    4. Buffer solutions. Biological buffers.
    5. UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy.
    6. Protein quantification methods.
    7. Chromatographic techniques. Basic principles.
    8. Instrumentation and techniques (centrifugation, electrophoresis)

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    The CU of Laboratory Techniques in Biochemistry has as main objective that students become familiar with the most used and ubiquitous laboratory techniques in Biochemistry. Correct posture in the lab.,good safety practices and basic notions of data analysis and are pursued. Different techniques such asUV-visible absorption spectroscopy, protein quantification methods, chromatography, centrifugation andelectrophoretic techniques. At the end of the course, students should master these basic techniques atthe experimental level, which will be used in many courses in the area of of biochemistry and chemistry during their degree. Students should be able to prepare solutions (buffers), distinguish precision from
    accuracy and use quantitative methods. Have a clear notion of detection limits and associated error, aswell as the precautions needed when handling different instruments (centrifuges,  electrophoresis andspectrophotometers).

    This CU is essentially practical and the practical work is directly related to the theoretical classes.
    Students carry out group and individual work.
