Class Nutritional Biochemistry

  • Presentation

    Presentation

Nutritional Biochemistry will focus on learning the chemical properties and structure of the micro- and macro-nutrients, how is accomplished the digestion and absorption of these micro- and macro-nutrients, as well as, the main metabolic pathways of the nutrients and their regulatory mechanisms, and which are the main functions of the nutrients in the human cell and tissues. There will also be given an emphasis to the pathologies associated with nutrient deficiency and its toxicity, and to the common metabolic diseases (e.g. atherosclerosis, diabetes, obesity, lactose intolerance). The student will acquire competences /or critically analysis of scientific papers, reviews, advertising, dietary recommendations and other issues related with the topic that are taught in this course.

     - Understand, globally, the concept of food and nutrient and its metabolism and importance to the body

    - Identify and understand the pathologies associated with nutrient excess or deficiency.

     - Identify and understand nutrition-related health problems and some of the metabolic diseases.

    - Understand nutrient absorption and digestion

    - Identify nutritional needs at different stages of life, occupations or activities so that you can understand what level of nutrient to eat.
