On 6 October 2025, the 1st edition of the Forum of Initiatives and Actions for Animal Welfare took place at Lusófona University, in the José Araújo Auditorium. The colloquium, held in both in-person and online formats, aimed to promote public and political debate on animal welfare in Portugal, bringing together experts and researchers in the field.
During the forum, key topics were discussed, such as the need to implement effective public policies based on scientific evidence, and the role of political institutions and entities from the productive sector in applying scientific advances. The debate addressed both the welfare of companion animals and of animals used in livestock farming, reflecting growing social concerns about more ethical, sustainable, and responsible practices.
This first edition marked an important step towards consolidating reflection and action around animal welfare in Portugal, reinforcing the urgency of aligning institutional and productive practices with current social values.
