Conference on the work "The Eye of God in Salazar's Discourse"
ULusófona takes scientific look at the religious dimension on the political dictatorship's discourse
14.06.24 - 12h40Lusófona University - Porto University Centre hosted another event in the cycle of commemorations for the 50th anniversary of 25 April, with the aim of celebrating and promoting reflection on the various dimensions of the impact of the Carnation Revolution on Portuguese society.
Professor Moisés de Lemos Martins, contrary to the usual practice of selecting the speaker for the session, was the speaker himself. Moisés de Lemos Martins is a Professor of Communication Sciences at the University of Minho and received his PhD in Social Sciences, specialising in Sociology, from the University of Strasbourg in 1984.
In his presentation, he focused on his book "O Olho de Deus no Discurso Salazarista". He explained that the idea for the book and his doctoral thesis came naturally, given his involvement in the intellectual circuits of "progressive Catholicism". The thesis culminated in the book that today is considered a reference in the study of the dominant discursive regime in Portugal during the Estado Novo, in the 1930s and 1940s.
Professor Moisés de Lemos Martins' book offers a scientifically valuable look at the religious dimension in the discourse legitimising Salazarism, questioning the general politics of Salazarist meaning and its regime of truth. He approached discourse as a disciplinary political practice, influencing historical memory, the gaze, desire and will.
During the conference, he also explained the symbolism of the book's cover, which features a man holding a rosary followed by church members. This image represents Salazar's influence on the church, reflected in the conformity of his followers.
This event is part of a series of initiatives designed to encourage critical reflection on the 50th anniversary of 25 April and the legacy of the Carnation Revolution in contemporary society.
