CLAIM – the Local Support Centre for Migrant Integration at Lusófona University held Training I – “Being a Mentor” on 2 and 3 September, as part of the Intercultural Mentoring Programme. The initiative took place at the Lisbon University Centre and brought together teaching staff, other staff members and third-country national students selected to take part in the programme.
The training followed the mentor recruitment process and aimed primarily to prepare participants to guide and support migrant students, contributing to a more positive and inclusive welcome and integration experience within the academic community.
Throughout the sessions, participants developed skills for working in intercultural contexts, deepened their understanding of the specific features of intercultural mentoring, and strengthened their communication and interpersonal skills. The training also sought to prepare future mentors to deal with challenging situations that may arise during the mentoring process.
Topics covered included the specific features of intercultural mentoring, crisis intervention situations in mentoring contexts, and group dynamics. The initiative also aimed to strengthen cooperation, teamwork and the development of a support network among participants.
